Founded in 1977 by Dominique de Menil, James Blue, and a community of passionate filmmakers, SWAMP has evolved from a grassroots movement into one of Texas’ most respected media arts organizations. Dominique de Menil, a philanthropist and visionary, was pivotal in supporting the creation of the organization, believing that film should be a tool for personal and community expression. James Blue, a renowned filmmaker and educator, also contributed greatly to SWAMP’s foundation, bringing his expertise and dedication to nurturing new voices in film. Together, their efforts laid the groundwork for SWAMP’s long-term commitment to film arts in the region.

The organization started by supporting film initiatives at the University of St. Thomas and later at Rice University, providing filmmakers with access to equipment and resources. SWAMP’s mission was—and continues to be—to democratize filmmaking tools and empower local communities to share their stories.

SWAMP honors its legacy by offering educational programs, supporting filmmakers, and creating platforms for independent film to thrive in Houston and beyond. Over the years, SWAMP has spearheaded numerous initiatives, including the long-running “The Territory” series, which showcases the work of Texas filmmakers on public television. Today, SWAMP remains committed to nurturing new talent, preserving film history, and supporting the vibrant, ever-growing filmmaking community in the region.
